Working in squares?
Make and measure a finished sample square before choosing the grid. The Granny Square Calculator works from the dimensions you enter; joining methods and borders still need to be considered separately.
Working in rows?
Use a swatch in the planned stitch pattern for your starting count. Read the pattern’s repeat instructions and check how it treats turning chains.
Planning your yarn?
Use the same yarn, hook and stitch pattern for the sample. Keep a separate allowance for joins, edgings and other finishing that is not represented in the rectangular area.

Which tool helps with a granny-square blanket?
Start with Granny Square to choose the layout. For yarn, use a representative sample and make sure joins and borders are included separately. Yarn Skein can convert your total length into whole balls.
Are turning chains included automatically?
The Starting Chain Calculator has an extra-turning-chain field. Check the pattern before entering a value: the calculator does not infer stitch instructions or decide whether a chain counts as a stitch.
Are yarn estimates exact shopping quantities?
No. They depend on your sample and the project area entered. Check the result against the pattern and account for finishing and any sections that use a different stitch pattern.
